Biography

Soprano Yongmi Cho is an acclaimed vocalist known for her rich tone and delicate musical interpretation that deeply moves her audiences. She graduated from Mokwon University with a degree in Music Education and later pursued her passion for opera in Italy. There, she completed her studies at the P. Mascagni Conservatory of Livorno, receiving professional vocal training, and further honed her artistry through the G. Donizetti Academy’s Advanced Performance Program, solidifying both her academic and artistic foundation.

During her years abroad, Cho distinguished herself on the international stage. She won 1st Prize at the Opera Rinata International Vocal Competition in Italy, earned 2nd Prize at the G. Donizetti Competition, and 3rd Prize at the Kaleidos Competition. These achievements not only highlighted her technical excellence but also shaped her as a performer with global artistry and stage experience.

Since returning to Korea, Cho has been performing actively across the country, including in Daejeon and Daegu. She has appeared in numerous recitals, operas, oratorios, and concert collaborations, continuously engaging with audiences through her expressive performances. Particularly noted for her interpretations of Verdi and Puccini, her singing is celebrated for its powerful projection paired with nuanced emotional depth. She also collaborates with local composers, introducing new Korean art songs and expanding her repertoire with creative and meaningful projects.

In addition to her performing career, Cho serves as an Adjunct Professor at Mokwon University, where she is devoted to nurturing the next generation of singers. • Was there any specific moment that influenced you to pursue a career in music? (음악을 전공하게 된 계기가 있으신가요?)

  I have always loved playing the piano and singing. During high school, my music teacher suggested that I should consider studying vocal performance professionally. That suggestion made me reflect on the possibility of an extraordinary life devoted to music. Therefore, without hesitation, I decided to pursue it.

  원래 피아노 치고 노래하는 것을 좋아했는데, 고등학교 재학 시절 음악 선생님께서 성악을 전공해볼 것을 제안하셨고, 문득 음악가로서의 삶이 아주 특별하겠다는 생각이 들어서 고민없이 바로 선택했어.

• Do you have a favorite piece or a composer? (가장 좋아하시는 곡이나 작곡가가 있으신가요?)

  I am particularly drawn to the Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini. His music, combined with the emotional depth of his operatic stories, resonates profoundly with me.

• Which particular works/composers do you think you perform the best? (본인이 생각하기에 어떤 특정 종류의 곡이나 작곡가의 곡을 가장 잘 연주한다고 생각하나요?)

  Among the two pillars of Italian opera, Verdi and Puccini, I have a personal affinity for Puccini’s works. Nevertheless, my repertoire has included more performances of Verdi’s compositions throughout my career.

• Which performance are you most proud of or resonates with you the most? (특별히 가장 자랑스럽거나 기억에 남는 공연이 있으신가요?)

  Around the time of my university graduation, I made my debut as the lead in an opera alongside established professional singers. It was an immensely rewarding experience, one that drew admiration—and even a touch of envy—from many colleagues. That performance remains a defining moment in my career.

• Which musician do you like the most, or are you most influenced by? (가장 좋아하거나 영향을 많이 받는 연주자가 누구인가요?)

  I have long admired the Italian soprano Mirella Freni, who sadly passed away. Her artistry and expressive style have profoundly influenced me, and I have dedicated significant time to studying and emulating her approach.

• What do you do offstage that inspires your musical artistry onstage? (삶의 어떤 부분들이 음악적 영감을 주나요?)

  I find inspiration in all aspects of life. Relationships with people, the subtle changes of nature, and everyday experiences all shape my emotions, which turn into my musical expression.

  모든 일상에서 영감을 얻어. 사람과의 관계, 자연에서 느끼는 변화들 모든 것이 감정의 변화에 많은 영향을 끼치는 것 같아.

• Do you have any unique practice techniques or routines? (자신만의 특별한 연습 방법이나 루틴이 따로 있으신가요?)

  There is nothing really special, but I repeat whatever it is until it’s flawless.

• Are there any exciting performances you've planned? (현재 준비 중인 설레는 공연 계획이 있으신가요?)

  Although I perform regularly, lecture concerts for children and teenagers continue to bring me great excitement. Providing context and explanation during these performances often sparks genuine curiosity in young audiences, giving the performance a unique vitality. This year, I am visiting schools monthly. Each concert is familiar yet always feels fresh and inspiring.

  자주 하는 공연이지만 클래식의 관심도가 많이 낮아지면서 어린이, 청소년들을 위한 렉쳐콘서트가 늘 설렘을 주는 것 같아. 설명을 더한 공연에 청소년들이 보이는 관심이 공연에 힘을 줘. 올해도 매달 학교로 찾아가는 공연을 하고 있어. 매달하는 공연이지만 늘 새로워.

• What have been the greatest challenges of your career so far and how did you overcome them? (지금까지 음악하면서 가장 큰 도전이나 힘든 순간이 언제였고 어떻게 극복하셨나요?)

  The classical music scene hasn’t been flourishing in recent years, resulting in fewer performance opportunities. Nevertheless, I maintain a firm belief that consistent effort inevitably leads to opportunities. By remaining diligent, I continue to perform, even if less frequently than before. To me, persistence is the key to a successful career.

  클래식 음악계가 많이 주춤하고 있어서 예전보다 공연이 많지 않아. 하지만 꾸준하게 노력하면 기회는 꼭 주어진다는 신념이 있지. 그렇게 노력하니 아주 많지는 않아도 늘 공연의 기회가 주어지는 것 같아. 꾸준함이 삶의 정답이야.

• What’s the one thing we’re not talking about in the classical music industry that you really feel we should be? (현재 클래식 음악 산업에서 충분히 논의되지 않고 있다고 느끼는, 하지만 꼭 이야기되어야 한다고 생각하는 주제는 무엇인가요?)

  In our fast-paced world, popularizing centuries-old Western classical music is challenging. The genre naturally appeals to a smaller, dedicated audience. Yet, the ability of classical music to move listeners, even today, demonstrates its enduring power. To reach a broader audience, it is essential to provide context and background before the performance. Lecture-recitals already exist, but there is a need for more innovative and engaging ways to present classical music that resonate with contemporary audiences.

  모든 것이 빨라진 세상에서 옛 서양의 음악을 대중화 하는 것은 쉬운 일이 아니야. 정말 좋아하는 사람 소수를 위한 장르가 될 수 밖에 없지. 하지만 수백년을 이어온 음악이 지금 현재에도 소수지만 수백년을 이어온 음악이 지금 현재에도 소수지만 관객에 감동을 준다는 것은 그 장르만의 매력과 저력이 있는 것이야. 작품의 배경이나 내용을 스스로 찾아 감상하러 오는 관객만 줄었다면 이제는 요즘 시대에 맞게 다양한 방법으로 정보를 먼저 주고 그 후 음악을 감상하게 한다면 클래식의 대중화가 더욱 잘 될거야. 물론 지금도 해설이 있는 음악회는 제법 많이 진행되고 있지만 더욱 다양한 방법으로 다가갈 수 있는 콘텐츠의 개발이 필요해.
